Sciatica
Sciatica is a term that describes symptoms of pain, numbness, and/or weakness that radiate along the sciatic nerve from the lower back to the buttocks and leg.
The medical term for sciatica is lumbar radiculopathy.
Sciatica symptoms are typically felt on only one side of the body.
They may include a combination of severe pain in the back, buttock, and leg, foot and/or leg weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot. It’s usually caused by a herniated disk, bone spurs on the spine, or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compressing part of the nerve.
Treatment options can range from physical therapy, and medications, to surgery in severe cases.
