Liver Cirrhosis
Liver cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease characterized by the scarring and damage of liver tissue.
It occurs when healthy liver cells are replaced by scar tissue, which disrupts the normal functioning of the liver.
This scarring can be caused by various factors, such as long-term alcohol abuse, chronic viral hepatitis (such as hepatitis B or C), fatty liver disease, autoimmune diseases, or certain genetic disorders.
As the liver tries to repair itself, the scar tissue accumulates and can lead to complications.
These complications may include liver failure, portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the liver), fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites), bleeding disorders, increased risk of infections, and an increased risk of liver cancer.
Symptoms of liver cirrhosis can vary but may include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), itching, easy bruising or bleeding, fluid retention, and mental confusion (high levels of ammonia in the blood).
Liver cirrhosis is a serious condition that requires medical management. Treatment aims to slow down the progression of the disease, manage complications, and improve the quality of life.
Lifestyle changes, such as abstaining from alcohol, maintaining a healthy diet, and avoiding certain medications, may be recommended.
It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of liver cirrhosis.
