Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the body’s arteries, the main blood vessels in the body.

It is one of the principal vital signs. Blood pressure is typically expressed as two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which are the maximum and minimum pressures, respectively.

Normal blood pressure at rest is within the range of 100-140mmHg systolic (top reading) and 60-90mmHg diastolic (bottom reading).

Signs and Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

  • High blood pressure is often termed a “silent killer” because it typically has no symptoms until significant damage has been done to the heart. However, some people may experience headaches, shortness of breath, or nosebleeds, although these symptoms occur less frequently.

Signs and Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure**

  • Symptoms of low blood pressure can include dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting (syncope), lack of concentration, blurred vision, nausea, cold, clammy, pale skin, rapid, shallow breathing, fatigue, and depression.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be caused by a variety of factors:

– Age: The risk of hypertension increases as you age.
– Family history: Hypertension tends to run in families.
– Obesity: The more you weigh, the more blood you need to supply oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, which increases the pressure on your artery walls.
– Lack of physical activity: Inactivity leads to higher heart rates, which means your heart works harder and causes more force on your arteries.
– Tobacco use: Chemicals in tobacco can damage your artery walls, narrowing your arteries and increasing your blood pressure.
– Excessive salt (sodium) in your diet: Too much sodium can cause fluid retention, which increases blood pressure.
– Alcohol abuse: Over time, heavy drinking can damage your heart.

Low blood pressure, or hypotension, can be caused by various factors, including:

   – Pregnancy: Because the circulatory system expands rapidly during pregnancy, blood pressure is likely to drop.
   – Heart problems: Some heart conditions can lead to low blood pressure, including extremely low heart rate (bradycardia), heart valve problems, heart attack, and heart failure.
   – Endocrine problems: Thyroid conditions, adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease), low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and, in some cases, diabetes can trigger low blood pressure.
   – Dehydration: When your body loses more water than it takes in, it can cause weakness, dizziness, and fatigue.
