Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a group of disorders characterized by scarring or inflammation of the lungs’ interstitial tissue, leading to severe breathing problems. 

The term ‘interstitial’ refers to the tissue and space around the air sacs in the lungs.

ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease) is a term for a group of diseases that affect the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs. 

This tissue called the interstation, becomes inflamed and scarred, which makes the lungs stiff and reduces their ability to transfer oxygen to the blood.

1. Shortness of Breath: This is often the first symptom, which may occur even during mild physical activity.

2. Dry Cough: A persistent, non-productive cough is a common sign of ILD.

3. Fatigue: Individuals with ILD often experience chronic fatigue and weakness.

4. Unintended Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss can occur in the later stages of ILD.

5. Clubbing: The widening and rounding of the tips of the fingers or toes is a late sign of ILD.

1. Environmental Factors: Long-term exposure to hazardous materials like asbestos, silica dust, or coal dust can cause ILD.

2. Radiation Treatment: Some people may develop ILD after undergoing radiation therapy for chest or breast cancer.

3. Medications: Certain drugs, including some antibiotics, heart medications, and chemotherapy drugs, can cause ILD.

4. Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma can lead to ILD.

5. Idiopathic: In many cases, the cause of ILD remains unknown, termed as idiopathic interstitial pneumonia.
