Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. It’s an autoimmune condition, which means it’s caused by the immune system attacking healthy body tissue. In severe cases, it can damage a wide variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule, a tough membrane that encloses all the joint parts. This lining, known as the synovial membrane, becomes inflamed and swollen. The disease process can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the joint.

Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing joint damage and can include medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional if you’re experiencing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can vary, but here are some common ones for each:

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

1. Tender, warm, swollen joints.

2. Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity.

3. Fatigue, fever, and weight loss.

4. Early Rheumatoid Arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first — particularly the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet.

5. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips, and shoulders.

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

1. Your genes: If a member of your family has rheumatoid arthritis, you may have an increased risk of the disease.

2. Your age: Rheumatoid arthritis can begin at any age, but the likelihood increases with age. The onset of rheumatoid arthritis is highest among adults in their sixties.

3. Your sex: Women are more likely than men to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

4. Environmental exposures: Although uncertain and poorly understood, some exposures such as asbestos or silica may increase the risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis.

5. Obesity: People —especially women— who are overweight or obese appear to be at a somewhat higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

6. Smoking: Cigarette smoking increases your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
