Budd Chiari Syndrome

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare condition that affects the liver.

It occurs when the blood flow out of the liver is blocked or restricted.

This blockage can occur in the veins that carry blood from the liver (hepatic veins) or in the large vein that brings blood to the liver (inferior vena cava).

The most common cause of Budd-Chiari syndrome is a blood clot in the veins of the liver.

Other causes can include certain medical conditions, such as polycythemia vera, a blood disorder, or certain infections.

Symptoms of Budd-Chiari syndrome can vary but may include abdominal pain, enlargement of the liver, ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen), and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

Some people may also experience fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment for Budd-Chiari syndrome depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.

It may involve medications to thin the blood and dissolve blood clots, procedures to open up or bypass blocked veins, or in severe cases, liver transplantation.

If you suspect you may have Budd-Chiari syndrome or are experiencing symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
